THE GUIDE: HOW AN AUTOMATIC KNIFE WORKS
THE HISTORY OF OTF KNIVES
Automatic knives or more commonly called knives Out-of-the-front (Blade comes out of the front of the knife) belong to the automatic knife family. They have gained popularity over the last 50 years and continue to do so with a wide range available on the market . The blades are no different from other knives and are available in combinations of single or double edges, serrated edges, tanto and other finishes. Outdoor knives, as the name suggests, only open from the front. These knives can be used in all areas of daily life, for personal or professional use. They are ideal because they can be used with one hand and save time. Switchblade knives are a favorite among hikers, fishermen, military personnel and other emergency service users such as firefighters and police.
OTF single action automatic knives with a single action mechanism. These knives have a release button that ejects the blade. They are fast and extremely efficient as they are deployed in seconds. However, to put the blade back in its place, a lever must be pulled backwards, requiring the use of both hands. It is important to take extra precautions to avoid injury when manually retracting the blade. The advantage of single action OTFs is that they are generally less expensive because they are less complex than their counterparts. Fewer parts mean less wear and tear, which means they are more durable and strong to last longer
The double action , as you guessed, allows two functions; eject the blade and replace it. There is no need for manual or two-handed operation. They are operated by a slide button which is located either on the main side of the handle or on the top side. They are designed to offer speed and convenience for use with your thumb. They are perfect if one-handed operation is required. Double action OTFs are more expensive because they are packed with more mechanical parts. This can potentially lead to faster wear and tear and may break more easily depending on use. Blade deployment may be slower than single action OTFs.
Both types of mechanisms have pros and cons that can prove to be key factors in deciding which automatic knife to buy. It is always a good idea to define your needs when choosing which knife to buy. Single-action OTFs offer speed and efficiency, while double-action offers more precision and convenience with one-handed operation.
OPENING KNIVES.
Side-opening knives tend to be the most popular types of switchblades. These knives have a release button that propels the blade open like a folding knife. However, in order to retract the blade, manual tension is required to fold the blade into the frame.
Prices tend to differ, especially between single and double action mechanisms, simply because double actions have more components. It is also important to note that they are also more prone to increased wear and tear and damage more easily if not properly maintained. This certainly doesn't mean they aren't worth it as they offer excellent strength and durability.
If you're a beginner, it might be best to test with a slightly cheaper side-opening or single-action knife to get a good feel for it.
